In a Sunset

In a sunset I see your eyes looking back at me,
telling me you're still there.
But while I'm here I don't see you anywhere
To look into the sun I risk blinding myself
So I watch the rays and see how far they travel...
They surround every space and touch every face...
I realize how much you fill every place...
I feel your warmth on me and wish that it could be,
a physical entity.
And as the sun sets
I am comforted by the fact
That you will be back.

DEREK

You can whisper these words or say them out loud

whether you say them to yourself or to a crowd

They will mean the same every time they're spoken

although now they are said from a heart that is broken

Don't cry when you say it, just look up high

Cause this time when you say it, you'll be speaking to the sky

Your words will be heard, although no longer through his ear

It's his spirit that's listening and he'll hold your words dear

So go ahead and tell him every day

He'll hear every word that you have to say

I love you is a good place to start

after that, the words will just pour from your heart

Derek is watching

as you grow through the years

your wedding, your babies

when you face your worst fears

Celebrate his life & miss him in death

and forget him never, until your last breath

you'll see him again

when it's your turn to walk

you'll meet him at the gates

you'll have time to talk

So for now tell him "I love you"

every single day

Your words will pass through the clouds

he'll hear what you have to say

Your brothers smile will shine in your heart

So look carefully you'll never be apart

So whether you whisper your words or say them out loud

Derek will hear them and he will always be proud

"How long will the pain last?
All the rest of your life.

But the thing to remember is that
not only the pain will last,
but the blessed memories as well.

Tears are the proof of love.
The more love, the more tears.

If this be true,
then how could we ever ask
that the pain cease altogether?

For then the memory of love would go with it.

The pain of grief is the price we pay for love.
